HP pushes Gigabit to the desktop

Hewlett-Packard has launched four Procurve switches that bring Gigabit Ethernet to the desktop, and continue its usual low-cost high-value approach to Ethernet networking.
The 2708 is a £597, eight-port Gigabit switch, and the 2724 is a 24-port Gigabit switch costing £1,684. Both these switches are low-cost, unmanaged products, aimed at small networks of greedy users.
The other two are managed switches to upgrade bigger networks, using Gigabit to aggregate 10/100 links at the wiring closet. The 2650 is a £1260 50-port stackable switch with two Gigabit uplinks, in "dual personality" ports that can handle either copper or fibre. The 6108 is an 8-port Gigabit switch -- two of which are dual personality allowing them to support fibre uplinks.
The switches can all be ordered from 4 November 2002.
