Microsoft has appointed Ashley Highfield as its new managing director of UK consumer and online operations.

Highfield, who, as the BBC's new media and technology chief, was responsible for leading much of the development of the iPlayer digital video platform, has, since April, been heading up Project Kangaroo, a version of the iPlayer that will supposedly incorporate other, non-BBC terrestrial UK channels. Project Kangaroo has, however, experienced delays while regulators investigate the commercial impact of the player.

"Microsoft today announced the appointment of Ashley Highfield as managing director and [vice president], consumer and online UK," Microsoft said in a statement on Monday.

"Consumer and online is a newly established global organisation which brings together consumer-facing products and services across PC, mobile and internet platforms to deliver a seamless experience," the statement continues. "This new organisation focuses on building a connection with consumers and growing our online advertising business, and Highfield will be responsible for driving all the sales, marketing, content and programming, business development, partner efforts and operations for Windows, Windows Mobile, Windows Live, MSN, Live Search and Microsoft Advertising."

According to Microsoft, Highfield will report to John Mangelaars, the company's vice president of consumer and online in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
