OpenOffice.org programmers have released a rough version of the open-source office suite that runs natively on Mac OS X.

The Microsoft Office competitor works on Linux and Unix systems using the X11 graphical interface, but the new version uses Apple's native Aqua interface.

OpenOffice.org warned those interested in the software that it was early days. "This software may crash and may destroy your data. Do not use this software for real work in a production environment," the download site warns.

There are serious issues yet to be addressed. The alpha version features of print, copy and paste are not fully functioning, and the software crashes after quitting.

Its the applications and device drivers that run on windows that cement its dominance. How many people would fork out hundreds of pounds for Vista if Linux ran all the software and kit they wanted to use.
