IBM's Lotus division is to offer a free 90-day trial of its Sametime software.

The trial will include a host of software including instant messaging, web conferencing, point-to-point video, mobile device support and voice over IP (VoIP) voice chat as well as integration with Sametime Gateway.

Specifically, the free trial includes:

  • IP telephony integration so users can, for example, initiate a voice call from within Lotus Sametime
  • Integrated VoIP so users can speak with other Lotus Sametime users in their company without having to pick up the phone
  • Integration with Microsoft Office and Outlook so users can send an instant message, initiate a call, or share an application directly from within Microsoft Office and Outlook
  • Point-to-point video so Windows users can integrate a webcam for their instant-messaging or VoIP conversation
  • Mobile device support so users can send and receive instant messages, including multi-person chats on a mobile
  • Plug-in and mash-up capabilities so users can, for example, pull information directly from a database into a Lotus Sametime instant-messaging chat

Sametime Gateway also allows users to send and receive instant messages with users of AIM, Google Talk and Yahoo! Messenger networks.

The 90-day trial version is available for Windows, Linux and Macintosh clients and AIX, Linux, Windows, i5 and z series servers. Lotus Sametime is available for $57 (£29) per user for a one-time software licence.

Mobile devices supported by Lotus Sametime include RIM BlackBerry, Nokia and Windows Mobile.

Lotus Sametime is a key product in IBM's open desktop strategy, which includes Lotus Notes email and collaboration software, the WebSphere Portal and Lotus expeditor, which uses the Eclipse rich client platform (RCP) for deploying composite applications and business mashups.
