The competition for groupware users has heated up again with Microsoft's launch of a new tool to help IBM Lotus Domino users migrate to Exchange more easily.

Although Microsoft Exchange dominates workgroup computing, IBM Lotus persists with a significant market share. This prompted Microsoft last year to launch Application Analyser and Data Migration 2006, which provides tools to help Lotus users move their software more easily to Exchange.

Now Microsoft has launched Transporter Suite, to help customers migrate email and collaboration software running on Lotus Domino 6 and 7 to Windows Server 2003-based Active Directory, Exchange Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

After releasing a beta of the software in January, the company announced the full rollout of the tools on Thursday.

Meanwhile, IBM is not standing still. In March, the company announced the first public beta of Lotus 8, which is expected to be released in full soon. The public beta is designed to offer features such as a choice of office productivity tools and the ability to group related email messages together based on conversation threads.
