CollabNet launched Subversion on Demand on Wednesday, a hosted version of the popular version control system used by many open source projects. The service is aimed at providing a fast and easy way of providing source code version control to large numbers of users, particularly where teams are geographically dispersed.

While Subversion is open source and freely available, CollabNet is hoping that by providing a pre-configured, hosted service with some added features, it can persuade development teams to pay for its product. In addition to the standard command line interface to Subversion, the product includes a Web administration interface, and some collaboration tools that complement the service.
