The Mozilla Foundation on Monday announced the finalists in a contest to find the best new add-on for the open source browser.

The contest, which was launched in November last year, is offering a total of 11 prizes for six different categories, including "Best Extension" and "Best Use of the New Firefox 1.5 Features". The award is aimed at encouraging the development of new extensions for Firefox, in particular those that take advantage of the features in 1.5, the latest major version of the open source browser.

The Mozilla Foundation said over 200 extensions were submitted to the contest. The 17 finalists it has selected include Forecastfox Enhanced, which displays international weather forecasts in a toolbar or the status bar, and DownThemAll, which lets you filter and download all the links contained in a Web page.

The winners of the contest will be announced in mid-February.
