The UK will get its first dedicated conference for PHP developers next month when the PHP London user group stages PHP Conference UK 2006 at the Keyworth Centre in London. The conference, taking place on 10 February, will include talks on a number of PHP-related topics by coders from around the UK and Europe.
The list of speakers includes Matt Zandstra, author of Teach Yourself PHP in 24 Hours, Harry Fuecks, author of The PHP Anthology and Christopher Kunz, a contributor to the Hardened-PHP project. Subjects include AJAX, the Dependency Injection pattern and RAD using PHP.
James Pearson-Kirk, one of the conference organisers, told Builder UK that the event isn't just aimed at pure code hacking: "We want it to be interesting for participants from a technical standpoint, but also to give attendees a chance to have a get together and have a chat." The idea of the conference grew out of PHP London's monthly meetings. "We all meet once a month for a beer and a chat so this gave us the opportunity to talk about planning a conference," Pearson-Kirk added.
The group has seen an increase in interest in PHP, both from individuals and companies looking for coders with PHP skills. "In terms of organisations, we have recently seemed to get lots of contact from employers offering jobs, both in our monthly meetings and via email. In terms of programmers, the PHP London list of members has grown to about 60," Pearson-Kirk commented.
PHP London usually meets in a pub in the capital. Pearson-Kirk describes the group's meetings as relaxed and informal. "It's usually a mix of demos, general programming chat and a beer or two. I think we're a fairly friendly bunch" he said. The group also has informal social events planned for the evening before the conference, and following it.
