Opera Software, based in Oslo, Norway, released Version 8 of its browser for the Symbian S60 mobile phone operating system. The new version, available for download, replaces Opera 6.2, whose users get a free upgrade.

Opera said the new browser, which uses the same browsing engine as Opera's desktop browser, has better support than previous versions for the JavaScript scripting language and DOM, a World Wide Web Consortium recommendation for letting scripts act on discrete parts of a Web document. Opera also said it had given its own technology for displaying standard HTML pages in small mobile phone windows, called Small-Screen Rendering, a "major upgrade", giving users the option to favour quality or speed in downloading pages.
