Microsoft has announced it plans to open a new research and development centre in Ireland.

The facility will be built at its Sandyford campus in County Dublin and will create around 100 jobs over the next two years. The new hires will work on the Redmond giant's digital terrestrial TV project for Windows Media Center as well as working on Longhorn, the next Windows iteration.

The announcement coincides with Microsoft's 20th anniversary in the country, where it now employs 1,200 people and houses its European Product Development Centre.

Microsoft is expected to invest around $6.1bn in research and development this fiscal year and has opened several R&D facilities of late, including a mobile facility in South Korea and a massive centre in Hyderabad.
