Linux leader Linus Torvalds on Saturday accepted support for the InfiniBand high-speed networking technology into the latest version of the Linux kernel, the core software at the heart of the open source operating system. InfiniBand advocates formed the OpenIB alliance to provide unified, open source support for the technology and submitted their work in the form of 18 patches on 12 January. The work is expected to make it easier to create Linux supercomputers, a reason that the Energy Department funded the OpenIB work.

OpenIB developers now will move to higher-level software support for the technology, the alliance said in statement. The group is holding a workshop from 6 to 9 February in Sonoma, California.
