Lindows to open up Web authoring

Lindows, a software company whose offerings include a version of the open-source Linux operating system intended to appeal to nontechnical users, announced this week that it is developing an open-source Web-authoring tool.
In a notice posted on the Lindows Web site, chief executive Michael Robertson says the Nvu project is aimed at creating a collection of Web tools comparable to Microsoft's FrontPage and Macromedia's Dreamweaver.
Robertson said Nvu will use some of the code for Mozilla Composer, the authoring element of the open-source Web browser. He expects Nvu to be ready next year.
Robertson, who first drew attention as founder of digital music company MP3.com, has emerged as a colourful antagonist of Microsoft since launching Lindows, which sells a version of the open-source Linux operating system intended to appeal to novice PC users. Robertson funded a $200,000 (£117,595) hacking challenge aimed at Microsoft's Xbox and will go to court later this year in a trademark dispute lodged by the software giant.
Under Lindows' MSfreePC promotion launched last month, the company will process the claims for anyone who qualifies for benefits from the recent settlement of a class-action suit that accused Microsoft of violating state antitrust laws. The legality of the programme has been challenged by Microsoft.
