MySQL grows up with certification

MySQL AB has set up a certification programme for its users, a step towards making the MySQL open-source database software more acceptable to big companies.
The software counts 4 million installations, including big tech companies such as Yahoo, Silicon Graphics, Motorola and NASA, but does not carry the weight of similar databases from Oracle and Microsoft.
The new certification programme is part of MySQL AB's efforts to bring its software onto an even footing with the more established products.
MySQL Core Certification is aimed at the professional MySQL user who wants proof of their ability in SQL data entry and maintenance and data extraction for reporting.
It is based on a single exam and costs $150, or about £93.
Due in the third quarter of this year is MySQL Professional Certification, at $250, for the more knowledgeable MySQL user who wants the credentials that prove their expertise in database management, installation, security, disaster prevention and optimisation.
The courses will be offered through Pearson VUE, the IT certification and testing business of Pearson.
A MySQL spokeman told ZDNet that the company will also offer PHP certification in the third quarter of 2003 and intends to have a DBA (database administrator) version of the programme in 2004.
