European Linux distributor MandrakeSoft released the latest major edition of its operating system, Mandrake Linux 8.0, on Thursday.

MandrakeSoft, a French-based company, describes its version of the popular Unix-based operating system as "a user-friendly" Linux operating system. It has packed the release with hundreds of desktop applications, the latest graphical user interfaces and optimised hardware support.

The new distribution includes version 2.4.3 of the new Linux kernel -- the heart of all Linux distributions -- along with the latest stable versions of the most popular graphical interfaces; KDE and Gnome. Mandrake 8.0 also boasts greater support for hardware peripherals including wider scope for 3D graphics cards and more USB support. It comes with an improved graphical installation process.

"We are very proud of our new distribution. Not only is it user-friendly and powerful, but Linux-Mandrake 8.0 also comprises over 2,300 applications," said cofounder of MandrakeSoft Federic Bastok, in a statement.

The new distribution has been uploaded, along with source code, to the Mandrake Web site and to various mirror sites on the Internet.
