Netscape Communications announced on Monday that Version 6 of its browser will be available as a public beta within the next 25 days.

The new software, which includes Netscape's cross-platform Gecko engine, will be smaller and faster than its predecessor, Netscape said.

It will also feature XUL, an extended markup language-based standard for laying out user interface elements that Netscape said will simplify the task of recreating the feature-rich interfaces of traditional desktop applications.
