A report released by the US Department of Justice on Thursday received a drubbing from cyber rights advocates and a congressional leader. Called "The Electronic Frontier: The Challenge of Unlawful Conduct Involving the Use of the Internet", the report blamed certain cyber rights laws for placing unnecessary hurdles in the path of law enforcement.

The American Civil Liberties Union lambasted the report for calling anonymity on the Web a "thorny issue" and advocating greater powers for law enforcement to wiretap Internet sessions to facilitate eavesdropping during a criminal investigation.
