Nokia's Communicator 9110i gets WAP

At CeBIT on Thursday, Nokia presented the Communicator 9110i with added WAP capability. The phone -- the first to combine PC and mobile functionality -- can be upgraded by installing a WAP browser add-on. The new mobile companion should become available in the third quarter, at the same time as the software upgrade package.

The Nokia 9110i Communicator provides true worldwide Web access as well as email services. "The Communicator's large display and keyboard are ideal for WAP-based applications and their graphic presentations," said Nokia manager, Søren Jenry Petersen, who promised that "services such as mobile banking, news or various company-specific Intranet programmes will be quickly accessible and easy to use".

The new Communicator will also support "quick imaging". With the help of new software, it will be able to search for data, and to improve handling and functionality, the PC suite supplied with the 9110i will be Office 2000-compatible. A MacSuite will be available for data exchange between the Communicator and an Apple Macintosh. Both versions of the new Communicator software are available to current owners of the Nokia 9110.
