Telecoms watchdog Oftel will hold a press conference at 11am this morning to explain its decision not to have British Telecom unbundle the local loop before the July 2001 deadline set following an earlier consultation.

The regulator told BT this morning that the original timetable, widely condemned for letting BT monopolise the local loop at the expense of the interests of the UK population, would not be changed. Oftel conceded it would like to see the local loop unbundled earlier, but that it was a "challenging task" for the Telco.

ZDNet UK News will report from the press conference.
