The Radio Authority has awarded Capital Radio Digital the local digital radio multiplex service licence for South-East Wales.

This is the first digital radio win for the company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Capital Radio. Under the terms of the license Capital will deliver digital radio programming and data services to the area's population of around 800,000.

Services, which are expected to commence in October 2000, will provide eight broadcast programmes on a round-the-clock basis. Programmes will include Capital Gold, a dance station, an adult contemporary station and modern rock from Xfm.

Although this is the company's first awarded multiplex, CE Digital, a joint venture between Capital Radio and Emap Radio has already won digital radio licenses for London, Manchester and Birmingham.

Digital Radio broadcasts will also be available in South-East Wales from Digital One, which was awarded the first national digital radio multiplex licence.
