Splitting MS won't benefit consumers - analyst

Higher prices and incompatibility for software could follow if the giant is turned into "baby bills" Lustig claimed. "Whether you like Windows or not, it is a standard that everyone benefits from. If there are three separate Microsofts, there may be three different operating systems which could create incompatibilities and force up prices," he said.

For Microsoft shareholders Lustig predicted the value of separate companies "could be considerably higher. No one should conclude that the combined value of a punished Microsoft will be less than it is today".
