A Year Ago: Intel plans speed boost for Web users

Intel yesterday announced its Quick Web Technology Internet caching product.

The Java-based software will not be sold through standard distribution channels but will be offered by ISPs or digital distribution firms as an additional, paid-for offering. US ISP Netcom has already signed up for the deal.

The product works by compressing and caching Web pages on the ISP's server so that they load quicker on users' PCs and comes with a Web-O-Meter tool that shows approximate performance gain.

Ironically, the chip giant is currently in the news for another strategy critics claim will slow down the Web. It is offering extra incentives for advertisers on key Web sites that produce pages flagging the suggestion that they are best viewed using Pentium II-based systems.
