The New York Times reported late Monday that Jeff Hawkins, the inventor of the PalmPilot, and Donna Dubinsky, the president of Palm Computing, will start a new firm that develops handheld devices.

The PalmPilot, which began shipping in 1996, holds a 63 percent share of the market for small handheld devices, according to market-research firm Dataquest.

The new company, which has yet to be named, will license the Palm operating system software from 3Com, according to the report.

Diana Hwang, an analyst at IDC, said the move is good news for the Palm OS, but probably not for 3Com.
