Eric Hahn, who joined Netscape in November 1995, resigned last week after just eight months on the job to found his own high-tech investment firm, reportedly called Inventures Group.

Netscape officials in Mountain View, California, said the company does not plan to replace Hahn. Instead, Netscape plans to appoint departmental chief technology officers to each of its three divisions: client, server and applications. A company official declined to give a time frame for when the departmental CTOs would be named, but said that appointees would be "technology inventors".

Hahn's departure comes at a time when the company is in transition--moving from a server software developer to a Web portal and IT services company.

"Appointing divisional CTOs almost implies three separate companies," said Ron Rappaport, an analyst with Zona Research, a Redwood City, California research firm that specialises in the Internet market. "Anytime you have three different chiefs, you risk not having a uniform vision."

Hahn replaced Marc Andreessen as acting CTO last October. The founder and former CEO of Collabra Software, Hahn joined Netscape when it acquired Collabra in 1995.
