US Robotics (USR) is turning up the heat on the K56flex modem camp by cutting prices on its 56Kbps-upgradable modems and cranking up a TV ad campaign to boost the technology. However, the firm is unlikely to start shipping x2 devices until late this month at earliest.

The Sportster Flash is cut by £30 to £199 incl. VAT with a free software upgrade to x2 when available; the Sportster Voice is cut to £149 from £199. Sportster Voice devices purchased after September 15 can be upgraded by a free chip swap.

Backing the initiative, USR will this week kick off TV advertising starring Apple guru Steve Wozniak demonstrating the speed of Net access using x2.
