Anybody seeking proof that digital cameras are reaching into the mainstream would have found plenty at the Comdex trade show in Las Vegas this week. Epson, Canon, Olympus, Minolta - and just about every other Japanese company and reporter it seemed - showed off units aimed at the $500 (about £330) non-specialist user.

One of the outstanding products on show was Olympus's D-300L, a lightweight unit offering the ability to store up to 120 images and supporting resolutions up to 1024 x 768. The D-300L ships with 6Mb RAM and offers smart features such as an LCD viewfinder, flash and red-eye reduction. A lower price version, the D-200L, stores up to 80 images at resolutions up to 640 x 480 but doesn't have a viewfinder.

Another neat camera shown was Minolta's DimageV with a detachable, removable zoom lens and 1.8-inch viewfinder.

UK pricing was unavailable.
