Matching US Robotics stride for stride, Rockwell Semiconductor Systems yesterday announced its first 56Kbps chipsets for inclusion in central site modem banks. The equipment will be used by ISPs and corporates offering remote LAN access.

Customers for Rockwell central site equipment will include Ascend, Cascade, Microcom, Racal and Shiva. Currently sampling, the first product available will be the RC336CSM. According to Rockwell, products "will be software upgradeable to the expected TIA/ITU standard". USR uses a Texas Instruments DSP that it also says will be upgradeable to the standard.

Rockwell will showcase 56Kbps technology at the Comdex Fall exhibition held November 18-22, 1996 in Las Vegas.
