JVC will produce a 14-speed (2,100Kb/sec) CD-ROM drive in volume by the end of the year. The Japanese giant intends to produce one million units a month by 1988 but is staying quiet about drive prices and the technology it will use.

Several companies including Hitachi and Pioneer have already come up with 10- and 12-speed drives but experts dispute whether very fast spin speeds will produce faster application performance as almost all software is still being written to slower drives.
