Connecting for Health has procured encryption software for use throughout the National Health Service.

The agency, which is responsible for the NHS National Programme for IT, has completed the national procurement of McAfee's SafeBoot software from Trustmarque Solutions. This covers licensing and maintenance so that NHS organisations can receive it free of charge.

The product is an enterprise-class solution for removable media which integrates with existing software-deployment tools and can be deployed in individual systems and across an organisation.

A Connecting for Health (CfH) spokesperson said the product was selected from a range of alternatives as the most appropriate. The procurement was prompted by an assurance exercise, initiated by the NHS's chief executive in December, which identified the need for a national agreement for encryption software.

"CfH ran a rapid procurement, in line with procurement rules, to do this in February and March, obtaining the software for a fraction of the cost that would have been incurred by local purchasing," the spokesperson said.

It seems to me this is a burden being placed on the wrong shoulders. There is not an It system in the world that can stop an individual taking information in their heads and spewing out at the nearest undesirable third party.
