HP tightens security with Unix encryption

HP has enhanced its Unix operating system with software encryption features. This means additional storage hardware is not needed, thereby cutting businesses' datacentre costs.
HP previously offered data encryption, but the release of its HP-UX 11i v2 software for its Integrity servers this week means encryption can now be carried out at the operating system level.
The vendor is also offering an embedded chip on the Integrity servers that holds the digital keys necessary to decrypt data.
HP has also released a new version of HP-UX Bastille, which is an open-source tool for security hardening. Bastille now includes assessment and drift reporting features that check the consistency of a system's hardening configuration with previously-applied hardening policies.
File and folder encryption is the top spending priority for IT managers in 2007, according to analyst company IDC, ahead of firewalls and virus protection.
