Consumers wishing to avoid the high street this Christmas are determined to shop online even if they have suffered a security breach on their PC, according to a survey of 250 consumers conducted by security vendor Kaspersky.

Kaspersky found that 85 percent of consumers plan to buy Christmas presents on the internet. A third plan to do so, despite claiming that their PC has been compromised by a hacking attack in the last six months.

Of those who reported a security breach on their PC, more than two thirds claimed that malicious spyware code, favoured by cybercriminals to surreptitiously steal users' banking details, was responsible.

However, 6 percent of the respondents said that they won't be using the internet to buy gifts for fear of having their personal data stolen.

"Hackers will be very aware that more online transactions are conducted in the run up to Christmas than at any other time of the year, and that huge numbers of people are disclosing their personal details online. This makes it hunting season for hackers," warned David Emm, senior technology consultant at Kaspersky.
