London art gallery the Tate Modern is set to host an awards ceremony celebrating the best in the UK graphics community.

The inaugural Escape Awards, to be held on Thursday 27 March, will be hosted by film producer Lord David Puttnam, whose screen credits include the Oscar-winning film, Chariots of Fire.

The awards, organised by Escape Studios, Europe's "first dedicated computer graphics and VFX school", are intended to recognise the achievements of professionals and students in visual effects, games and design visualisation. The deadline for entries is Wednesday 13 February.

Lord Puttnam will preside over a panel of more than 30 judges, including director Danny Boyle, Autodesk's EMEA director Patrick Jocelyn and industry figures from companies such as Pixar, DreamWorks and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

Lord Puttnam hailed the achievements of the UK creative graphics industry, calling it the "jewel in the crown of UK business".

Escape Studios's chief executive Dominic Davenport said: "We've had nothing but support from everyone we've spoken to, proving that a major annual event that brings together the UK CG community is long overdue."

The categories are:

  • Visual effects in film
  • Visual effects in broadcast
  • Visual effects in commercials
  • Visual effects in music
  • Games
  • Design visualisation
  • Technology
  • Student in visual effects
  • Student in games
  • Student in design visualisation

You can find an entry form at the organisers' website.
