The National Computing Centre has launched an initiative to promote professionalism in enterprise architecture and systems engineering.

In a series of workshops known as the "EA-SE Programme", IT professionals will meet to define best practice in both subject areas. This best practice will feed into education and training programmes. The programme also aims to provide a common language for enterprise architecture (EA) and systems engineering (SE).

Michael Dean, group marketing manager for the National Computing Centre, said that a lack of common business terminology means that the existing pool of people with systems architecture skills is not being utilised effectively. "Some businesses have a slightly different view of what enterprise architecture is, and the people with the skills are not speaking a common language. What is enterprise architecture to one person might be business-process modelling to another," Dean said.

"Enterprise architects need a broad range of skills, from technical understanding of frameworks and modelling to business understanding and communications skills," he added.

Programme workshops start on 28 June and attract a "nominal" entry fee. The scheme runs in conjunction with the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and is endorsed by the British Computer Society, Intellect and government ICT skills council e-skills UK.
