Lords a-leaping at internet security

Lotus Notes has been holding out against the market dominance of Microsoft's Outlook package for several years now. This week, IBM will use the Lotusphere conference to promote the Lotus brand and debate its future.

The conference is taking place in Orlando, Florida, between Sunday 21 January and Thursday 25 January. Key themes will be networking and collaboration, the use of social software by businesses, and the virtual world Second Life, of which IBM is a keen support. ZDNet UK will be reporting live from Lotusphere throughout the conference.

Closer to home, the NHS IT project will be examined in detail on Wednesday at the Continua Health Alliance/NHS telehealth symposium. Margaret Hodge MP, minister of state for industry, will be speaking at London's QE2 conference centre, as well Richard Granger, director general for NHS IT.

Granger may face some tough questions, as several IT experts have recently warned that the Connecting for Health project appears to be lurching towards disaster.

Over at parliament, the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will continue to examine internet security in the UK. Having questioned Linux expert Alan Cox last week, they will now hear from representatives from the Information Commissioner's Office and the Office of Fair Trading.

The mobile industry will also be gathering in London to debate the future of convergence; or, as they put it, the challenge of 'Achieving Advanced Functionality in a Manageable and Monetise-able Wi-Fi/Cellular Environment'. Don't be put off by the title, though, as senior executives from BT, O2, Nokia and HTC will be attending Mobile Converged Devices, as will we.

ZDNet UK will also be visiting FinExpo 2007 on Wednesday, where the major IT strategies and developments affecting the financial markets will be discussed. Vista and open source are likely to be high up the agenda.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
