The battle to dominate the market to provide data replication and recovery software for companies burdened with legacy applications took another turn with Network Appliances' purchase of Topio.

Storage-management firm NetApp entered into a definitive agreement to purchase Topio for $160m (£84m) in an all-cash deal on Wednesday. With its research and development based in Haifa, Israel, Topio has built up a reputation for providing solutions to help companies replicate their production data on any other vendor's hardware — including IBM, HP, Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) and EMC.

The move is being seen as a shrewd one that expands NetApp's portfolio, offering a reliable way for companies to move their vital corporate data onto lower-cost platforms, such as NetApp's own storage devices. The key is helping customers to do this in a non-disruptive way.

"This increase is driven by companies' ongoing efforts to improve application availability, meet government guidelines and implement disaster recovery plans designed to better protect data assets," said IDC in a research note. "These needs are spurring greater awareness of how storage replication solutions will play a central role in protecting companies' IT infrastructures."

IDC said it expects these concerns to fuel growth in the market over the coming years.
