The CNET Networks Technology Awards 2005 have opened for business. The awards, now in their third year, are organised by ZDNet UK's parent company CNET Networks UK to recognise innovation and excellence both among those who use technology and in the technology industry itself.

For 2005 we have added some new categories and tweaked some old ones to acknowledge the changing nature of IT — the most notable addition is the category for Open Source Initiative of the Year.

Winners of the 14 categories will be honoured at a gala dinner to be held in London's famous Park Lane Hilton on 27 September.

But before we can honour the winners we have to find them.

Has your company made an outstanding contribution to technology innovation? Have you employed technology to push your business forward? If so, we want to know about it. If you think you've earned your place at a table, enter the CNET Networks UK Awards here and get the recognition you deserve.

The categories are:

  • Infrastructure Technology Product of the Year

  • Mobile Product or Initiative of the Year

  • Networking/Storage Product of the Year

  • Security Product of the Year

  • Open Source Initiative of the Year

  • Outstanding Contribution to Software Development

  • Technology PR Campaign of the Year

  • Technology Marketing Campaign of the Year

  • Public Sector Technology Project of the Year Category

  • Financial Services Technology Project of the Year

  • Retail/Leisure Sector Technology Project of the Year

  • Telecommunications Sector Technology Project of the Year

  • CIO of the Year

  • Outstanding Contribution to the UK Technology Industry

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
