Brian White, the former Labour MP for North East Milton Keynes who lost his narrow majority of 1,829 in Thursday's election, is looking for a new role, preferably in IT.

White, whose seat was taken by Conservative candidate Mark Lancaster, said on Friday morning that he now plans to take a week's holiday before he starts his job seeking. The former systems analyst at Abbey National told ZDNet UK that he is open to offers.

White has been a high-profile champion of UK technology in his leading roles in several cross-party parliamentary organisations, including the influential All Party Parliamentary Internet Group (APIG). APIG has played a key part in highlighting industry concerns over data retention that arose with the introduction of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act and the Anti-Terrorism Crime and Security Act.

More recently, as chairman of the European Information Society Group (EURIM), White lobbied the government to employ IT professionals as special constables to hunt down cybercriminals. In January 2005, EURIM released its recommendations for a long-term progress plan to improve Internet safety, primarily the creation of an international crime-fighting partnership to protect children, national infrastructures and companies on the Internet.

White has also served as chairman of the E-Democracy Group, and treasurer of the Parliamentary Information Technology Committee (PITCOM).

White can be reached at info@brianwhite.org.uk.
