A UK man was due in court on Monday over claims he used a network of zombies to commit distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

The 27-year-old, from Elgin in North-East Scotland, was arrested on Friday after a joint investigation by the Scottish Drug Enforcement Agency and the US Secret Service.

Houses were raided in the Elgin area in connection with the operation, aimed at finding those behind extortion-related DoS attacks.

The man has been charged under the Computer Misuse Act with targeting both US and Scottish businesses. It's only the second time anyone has been charged with a DDoS offence.

Aaron Caffrey, charged with committing a DDoS attack on the port of Houston's IT systems, was acquitted in 2003.
