Computer Associates has confirmed that John Swainson, formerly vice-president of worldwide software sales for IBM, is to be its new chief executive.

Swainson has been officially named as president and CEO of the company and been elected to the company's board of directors, expanding it to 10 members, the company said.

"I am very pleased that a person of John Swainson's stature has agreed to lead CA," said chairman for the firm Lewis Ranieri.

"He is an excellent complement to our very strong CA management team. He has a passion for the customer that is unsurpassed, and an understanding of how to execute on a technology vision that drives revenue growth," said Ranieri.

Swainson replaces interim CEO Ken Cron, who replaced Sanjay Kumar who resigned after questions arose over the company's accounting practices. Kumar was indicted in September for obstruction of justice and securities fraud.

Earlier this year at CA World, the companies annual conference, Cron said that the company was ready to move on.

Cron is expected to continue on the company's board of directors.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
