HP announces services windfall

Hewlett-Packard on Wednesday announced three services contracts totalling $500m (£270m).

The computer maker signed a five-year, $112m contract with MCI; a seven-year, $320m agreement with global financial services firm TD Bank Financial Group; and a five-year, $53m contract with document software firm Standard Register.

The latest outsourcing contracts have come close on the heels of a $1.5bn deal struck with global telecommunications giant BT Group. Hewlett-Packard's outsourcing business grew more than 50 percent last quarter compared to the same period of the previous year.

For MCI, HP Services will provide technical support for up to 40,000 notebook and desktops PCs, workstations and printers in 600 MCI offices in the United States, and provide software solutions and administer Unix and Microsoft Exchange systems.

The deal with TD Bank entails upgrading 2,400 automated teller machines across Canada and its electronic and banking and transaction processing systems.

HP Services will also manage Standard Register's wide-area network of 4,100 desktops and 650 servers and make available all software required for its 30 varied applications. HP and Standard Register also have plans to join forces to work in selected areas of health-care and financial services markets.

Separately, MCI announced bagging a $125m contract from HP for communication services. HP will use MCI's remote Internet access service, and MCI will remain HP's primary communications provider for its customer contact centres, delivering toll-free 800 services.

Additionally, HP will continue to use SkyTel's wireless paging and messaging services, including two-way text messaging and Blackberry messaging services to network with its 6,500 employees.
