Sony slashes jobs worldwide

Sony will cut up to 20,000 jobs worldwide as part of company-wide reform policy, according to news site Mainichi Daily News.
The cuts will happen through the retirement of older staff and limiting the intake of new workers, said the report.
Two Japan factories producing cathode ray tubes (CRT) used in TV and computer displays will next year switch to assembling TVs. Demand for CRT displays is falling as consumers switch to LCD and plasma displays, said the report.
There are seven Sony CRT plants world-wide, with two each in Japan and the US, and one each in China, the UK and Singapore. Sony's representatives in Singapore could not comment on how the moves will affect the rest of Asia-Pacific at press time.
The moves are expected to be included in a reform plan the electronics giant will announce on 28 October, and which will affect operations up to 2005, said the Mainichi report.
