Motorola unveils its latest models

Motorola further underlined its focus on multimedia mobile phones yesterday with the launch of four camera-integrated mobiles.

Among the eight phones unveiled at its trade show in China for the global market were the A835, E365, V295 and V600, which all come with embedded cameras. In addition, the T725 will be compatible with camera add-ons.
Reflecting trends in the handset industry, most of the phones will sport high-end features wireless Java, multimedia messaging service (MMS) and colour displays.
"Our surveys have revealed that consumers around the world want a phone they can put on the table when they sit down," said Stuart Redsun, Motorola's global director for Brand Marketing.
With its new products, Motorola aimed to provide funcionality together with "must-have desire", Redsun said during Motorola's HelloMoto show.
MMS lets users send pictures and sound between compatible handsets, while Java allows new applications and games to be downloaded onto the phones. Both technologies are big bets for the industry as mobile operators seek to generate new revenue streams.
The HelloMoto event, held in Shanghai, also commemorated Motorola's 75th anniversary. After suffering losses in 2001 and the beginning of 2002, company officials have insisted in recent months that the Chicago-based communications systems and equipment manufacturer is back on track. "When Motorola started 75 years ago with the car radio, we had a product that could excite consumers, allowing them to drive and listen to music at the same time," said Redsun. "With this new portfolio, we have shown that we can still excite."
The diverse range showcased included the V295, a clamshell phone with MMS, Java, polyphony, as well as a built-in camera. The A388c, a successor to Motorola's A388 PDA-phone, supports up to 65,000 colours. Both handsets are expected in the first half of 2003.
Other Motorola phones, due in the second half of 2003, will be:
- The A835, compatible with third-generation high-speed networks, which combines camera, PDA and cellphone functions. It plays MP3 music files and comes with 256MB memory.
- The E380, which comes with Java, MMS, colour display, plus enhanced vibration for gaming.
- The E365, which supports up to 262,000 colours, in addition to offering features such as MMS, Java and an integrated camera.
- The colour-screen T725, compatibile with high-speed Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) networks, which supports download speeds of up to 177kbps.
- The Motorola C350, an inexpensive colour-screen mobile that offers polyphony and interchangeable housings.
- The V600 which has a large dsplay capable of up to 64,000 colours. It also offers Bluetooth, MMS, and an integrated camera.
