SAP has won a £4m contract from Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council for e-government systems based on mySAP.com components.

The council has bought the financials, procurement, works management, property management, CRM and portal components, replacing in-house applications previously running on a mainframe.

Mark Gibbison, head of e-government at Trafford, said: "It wasn't an IT decision to use SAP at the end of the day. It was an inclusive decision-making process and managers were happy to go with a well-known provider."

Trafford won't immediately be using SAP for HR and payroll functions, having previously replaced creaking systems two years ago, and Gibbison denied there had been any real trepidation internally about committing to a large SAP project.

Some 10,000 staff will start to use SAP CRM in January and consultants from the German software giant will stay on to help with integration issues.

Trafford is among 20 UK local authorities to use mySAP.com, and in a separate announcement, SAP said Stafford County Council is working with ITNET to roll out the technology in a deal worth over £7m. It will cover e-government for all sorts of services and be used by 8,500 users.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
