Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron has reportedly won a deal to produce personal digital assistants for Dell Computer.

According to a report in Taiwan's DigiTimes, Dell has placed an order with Wistron to manufacture 1.1 million handhelds, slated for launch by Christmas.

The device is expected to be ready in November, with a price tag of US$299 (£178), DigiTimes said, citing sources.

The PDA could possibly run on Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system, and share similar functionalities as the iPAQ from Hewlett-Packard.

Formerly Acer's design, manufacturing and services arm, Wistron is said to have edged out fellow Taiwanese companies Compal, Mitac Technology and High Tech Computer to bag the deal.

Wistron spokeswoman Pollin Chou declined to comment on the report. Dell Asia-Pacific spokeswoman Judy Low said: "We don't comment on speculation and have not made any formal announcement. We continue to review our offerings based on customer requirements."

As reported on Monday, First Albany analyst Walter Winnitzki said Dell was likely to enter the handheld market later this year.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
