In a move aimed to show it still has a bright future, Palm on Monday announced two new colour handhelds.

As previously reported, the m515 is an incremental improvement to the top-of-the-line m505, adding more memory and a brighter screen, while the m130 is a new mid-range colour model similar to the m125 but with a 16-bit colour screen.

At £229, the m130 is one of the least expensive colour-screen handheld models on the market, with Handspring's ageing Visor Prism model being the nearest Palm OS-based competitor. Like the m125, which costs £169.99 in the UK, the unit has a Secure Digital expansion slot and universal connector.

The £369 m515 offers its added features for the same price as the m505, which was introduced last spring. Palm is also offering the m515 bundled with a Bluetooth SD card for £449.99. Both handhelds are available in the UK immediately.

Palm also announced the European availability of the Palm OS 4.1 software upgrade for Palm V, Vx, III, IIIx, IIIxe and IIIc handhelds, adding Internet, data-management and security features. The upgrade sells for about £24.

The company recently released its i705 wireless device in the US and is also splitting its hardware and operating system businesses.

The new products and organisational changes are part of the company's effort to rebound from a brutal 2001 in which the company suffered through and inventory glut, a price war and hefty losses.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
