Microsoft president and chief operating officer Rick Belluzzo will proceed with his planned visit to Singapore next Monday despite the terrorist attacks that turned parts of the US into a disaster zone on Tuesday.
Belluzzo is slated to open Microsoft's first XML Web services centre in Singapore on Monday. The S$5m facility will offer the capability to test, share and learn best practices in developing XML Web services under one roof.
Among the executives who will be accompanying Belluzzo is Steven C Guggenheimer, Microsoft's senior director for Business Management.
Belluzo will start his one-week Asian tour in Singapore, followed by visits to Taiwan, Japan and India.
Meanwhile, Tom Hogan, Vignette president and chief operating officer, has cancelled his visit to Singapore next week. He was scheduled to launch Vignette's latest content management suite, V6.
Daniel Lewin, Akamai's co-founder and chief technical officer, was on board American Ailrlines Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles, when it was hijacked and subsequently crashed into the World Trade Centre.
All US exchanges and markets will remain closed. Across Asia, stock exchanges in Taiwan and Malaysia have suspended trading.
Earlier, Reuters reported that the hijackers who crashed an American Airlines aircraft into the Pentagon had brandished knives and cardboard cutters to take over the aircraft. Apparently the hijackers were not carrying firearms.
The information was revealed during two telephone calls that Barbara Olson, wife of the US Solicitor General Ted Olson, made from aboard the aircraft before the crash. Barbara Olson, who was a commentator for CNN, was one of the 64 people killed in the crash.
