News Burst: RIP bill 'will harm business'

Government plans to introduce the Regulation of Investigatory Powers (RIP) Bill will harm business, warns the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).

Last week, the BCC wrote to the Home Secretary, Jack Straw, expressing concerns about the bill which has become something of a victim to civil liberties advocates who claim it is unworkable.

In his letter to Straw, Chris Humphries, BCC director general, says: "There is a real danger the competitive disadvantage caused by this measure will frustrate the government's ambition of making the UK the best place to trade electronically by 2002."

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
