There's no doubt that Transmeta's first foray into the land of mobile processors has caused a stir, not least because it looks as though its Crusoe chip will be taking on the likes of Arm and Intel with experts predicting a major shakeup.

Launched Wednesday in the US, the marketing men at Transmeta made sure Linus Torvalds was there to lend his support for the processor, which he helped develop.

ZDNet's Crusoe roundup follows the hype and explores the issues facing the little chip.

    Crusoe, the story so far:

  • Fri, 21 Jan 2000 -- Transmeta round-up: Technology worth the hype?

  • Thu, 20 Jan 2000 -- A day after the launch and S3 announces the first Crusoe device.

  • Thu, 20 Jan 2000 -- Analysts reckon there will be a ripple effect on Psion, ARM and others.

  • Thu, 20 Jan 2000 -- Transmeta takes wraps off Crusoe. After all the waiting, Linus and the rest of the Transmeta team reveal the Crusoe in all its glory.

  • Thu, 20 Jan 2000 -- It's all very well saying this is IT guys, but how does the Crusoe work? All is revealed by ZDNet's John G. Spooner

  • Wed, 19 Jan 2000 -- While Transmeta basks in the glory of its achievements, things took a downward turn for UK chip manufacturer ARM.

  • Tue, 18 Jan 2000 -- As you'd expect, ZDNet was there when it all happened and if you want to see the press conference, just click here.

  • Fri, 14 Jan 2000 -- Less than a week to go and the speculation hots up.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
