News Burst: BT, Oftel argue over unbundling local loop

Unbundling the loop -- which will allow other operators access to BT's network -- has been timetabled to happen in 2001. Critics argue it should happen sooner as it is only then that a fully competitive telecoms market can exist in the UK. Oftel has admitted that unbundling is key to ensure the best "choice, quality and value for money" for the consumer.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
