Russian newspaper Itar-Tass is reporting that Russian hackers recently gained illegal access to the trading database of UK news agency Reuters.

Press secretary of the Russian Chief Administration for Struggle against Economic Crime, Alexander Vorobyov, reportedly revealed this information to Itar-Tass Tuesday. According to the newspaper, a former Reuters employee used stolen passwords to gain remote satellite-enabled access to the agency's database and stock-exchange automated quotations and facilities.

Itar-Tass reports that the information was then used to set up a stock dealing operation called Kentavr within a Moscow school.

The whole operation is said to have cost Reuters more than $3m (£2m) over a period of months.
