News Burst: ICQ nets 40m subscribers

America Online said Monday that it has signed up more than 40m members for its ICQ instant messaging service. AOL said that ICQ membership has tripled since AOL acquired the company in June 1998. AOL said 85 percent of ICQ's members are under 35, an attractive demographic for advertisers.

When all is said, if Microsoft produce the best product people will buy it and thats a good thing. If people have to buy their product because no one else can produce an alternative, only because interoperability protocols are kept secret, then thats a bad thing.
